چکیده

Residents living near a polyurethane foam manufacturing facility expressed concern to health officials-over chemical emissions from the plnt. Environmental monitoring of ambient air near the plant indicated the presence of toluene diisocyanate (TDI), which was ued in foam producton. Health official collected blood samples from 113 residents and analyzd the blood sera for antibodies to TDI and related diisocnates. Ten of the 113 residents (9%) had elevated lewls of IgG or IgE antibodies specfic for one or more diisocyanates. Exposure histories were taken from antibody-positive individuals to identify possible occupational exposure to TDI or the use of diisocaate-containing consumer products. Exposure to TDI.in ambient air may be responsible for the positive antibody responses detected in some residents of the community. Key work: ambient air, antibodies, environmental exposure, toluene diisocyanate (TDI). Environ Health Prspect 106:665-666 (1998). A re-examination of variation associated with environmentally stressed organisms.

Variation is an essential feature of biological systems. Populations adapt to dynamic environments, in part, because of this variation. In this review, we re-examine phenotypic variation, especially in organisms living in polluted environments. A recent goal of ecotoxicology is to understand the sublethal effects of exposure to pollutants, e.g. responses to endocrine-disrupting contaminants. Wh...

Environmentally Realistic Exposure to the Herbicide Atrazine Alters Some Sexually Selected Traits in Male Guppies

Male mating signals, including ornaments and courtship displays, and other sexually selected traits, like male-male aggression, are largely controlled by sex hormones. Environmental pollutants, notably endocrine disrupting compounds, can interfere with the proper functioning of hormones, thereby impacting the expression of hormonally regulated traits. Atrazine, one of the most widely used herbi...

Environmental pleural plaques in an asbestos exposed population of northeast Corsica.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the inhabitants of villages environmentally exposed to asbestos, in northeast Corsica, had a higher incidence of pleural plaques. X-rays were obtained from subjects aged over 50 yrs, with no occupational exposure to asbestos or history of pleural disease, in one village exposed to asbestos, Murato, and a nonexposed, control village, Vezzani. In...

Effects of the pyrethroid esfenvalerate on life-cycle traits and population dynamics of Chironomus riparius--importance of exposure scenario.

Field populations of aquatic organisms, particularly those inhabiting flowing waters, likely are exposed to short pulses of pesticides following periods of spray drift, surface runoff, or drain flow. In the present study, we investigated the effect of pulse exposures of a pyrethroid insecticide, esfenvalerate, on survival, development, and reproduction of the midge, Chironomus riparius. The fir...

Evidence of altered brain sexual differentiation in mice exposed perinatally to low, environmentally relevant levels of bisphenol A.

Humans are routinely exposed to bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogenic chemical present in food and beverage containers, dental composites, and many products in the home and workplace. BPA binds both classical nuclear estrogen receptors and facilitates membrane-initiated estrogenic effects. Here we explore the ability of environmentally relevant exposure to BPA to affect anatomical and functional mea...

Acute Toxicity and Biological Responses of Clarias gariepinus to Environmentally Realistic Chlorpyrifos Concentrations

In this study, the lethal toxicity, behavioral responses and hematotoxicity of formulated chlorpyrifos on Clarias gariepinus was evaluated. C. gariepinus fingerlings were exposed to 0.2 mg/L, 0.25 mg/L, 0.3 mg/L, 0.35 mg/L and 0.4 mg/L of the active ingredient chlorpyrifos to determine the lethal concentrations and behavioral effects. C. gariepinus juveniles (38.84±7.67g) were then exposed to 0...
